FOBA Chess
Team take multiple awards
Much applause and appreciation goes
to Harold Steen, chess coach of Bates Academy. In
his five years working with Bates students, Mr.
Steen has developed some outstanding players. This
academic year alone the Bates team has won numerous
awards.
Among them:
Special recognition goes to James
Canty III, 12-year-old seventh grader who is the
national champion in Blitz, a chess game that factors
in speed. He placed first out of 2,000 students
from across the country.
Bates swept first place honors in the
City League Tournament:
K-3 champions
K-6 champions
K-9 champions
Statewide Tournament:
Number 2 in Elementary division.
Number 1 in the K-9 (middle school) division.
Number 1 in a special section that has middle schoolers competing
with high schoolers.
U.S. Supernationals Tournament held
in Nashville, Tenn.:
6th place out of 600 teams in the
K-9 division/Blitz games, which are speed games.
8th place out of 100-plus teams in the Bug House games, games
in which players play as partners
11th place out of 80 teams in the elementary division.
Congratulations Bates Chess Players,
Coaches and Parents!!!!
We wish Mr. Steen well as he steps
down for full-time coaching responsibilities because
of health challenges. He's confident his
successor, Anthony Lacey, who takes over this month
(April) will continue to produce winners.
People interested in playing or learning
to play will still find Mr. Steen helping out at
the weekly gatherings of the Detroit City Chess
Club from 4 to 8 p.m. Fridays at the Detroit Institute
of Arts.
